Brunswick County looking for volunteers for new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — In Brunswick County, a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is still in the early phase of development. Officials are looking to train volunteers who can provide support in emergency situations to help free up the highly trained emergency responders when they are needed.

Brunswick County Emergency Management Director David McIntire is looking forward to the venture.

“The goal there is to take and pull experience, and knowledge, and willingness to participate in awareness activities response. Whatever it may be for the county level,” said McIntire.

The team falls under FEMA, North Carolina Emergency Management and Brunswick County Emergency Management. They need volunteers to help in situations such as disaster medical triage, helping with the call center, traffic control and more.

But there are some areas where they are looking for the most help.

“We’re going to specialize within two areas of our CERT program. First being within our radiation program for the nuclear plant. Lastly, we’re wanting to implement an advanced search and rescue team. We have another large group of folks who are wanting to get back into it,” McIntire said.

Even if you do not fit that criteria or have never volunteered before, they are still looking for people willing to lend a helping hand. If you are looking to volunteer, please contact Brunswick County Emergency Management.
