WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 21st annual North Carolina Black Film Festival wraps up on Sunday.

The festival will close at Cameron Art Museum on Sunday at 2 p.m. with an awards ceremony and a showing of the film “Arts, Beats, and Lyrics,” a documentary about a visual art and hip-hop show that began in Atlanta in 2004.

The film festival has been going since Thursday and saw hundreds of attendees eager to hear the stories of black filmmakers.

The festival included several student films, as well as work from more established filmmakers like B.K. Fulton, who attended the festival and showed his film “The Kill Room” starring Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman. Fulton will also receive the 2024 Rennaissance award for his extensive career. Festival director Charlon Everett said the festival helps give a platform to black filmmakers far and wide.

“We need a platform to tell our stories, I think it’s important for us to tell our own stories. Lots of people love to do documentaries and films about us, but it’s important that our filmmakers are able to tell those stories and have a platform to do that, and highlight the work of black filmmakers,” she said.
