Piedmont Gas infrastructure work underway on Sunnyvale Drive
WILMINGTON — Routine infrastructure work is underway on Sunnyvale Drive and could cause some driver delays or detours.
Piedmont Natural Gas began work Thursday on the 700 block of Sunnyvale Drive, close to the intersection of Bryan Road, and hopes to wrap up by Wednesday, March 22.
The operations will include use of a flare stack (a large vertical pipe), which could produce a loud noise and result in a tall flame being visible to nearby neighborhoods and businesses, according to the press release.
People in the area may also notice a whistling sound or the smell of natural gas. Piedmont Gas wants to warn residents so as to avoid unnecessary concerns or 911 calls.
“These activities are key to continuing Piedmont’s safe, reliable natural gas service and meeting the increased demand for natural gas,” a Duke Energy spokesperson said in the release.
Piedmont Natural Gas is a subsidiary of Duke Energy and distributes natural gas to more than 1.1 million commercial, industrial and residential customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
